Bellefonte was established in 1795 and incorporated as a borough in 1806. The community became the seat of Centre County in 1800 and developed into an important center of commerce, government, industry, and political activity during the nineteenth century. The town itself was laid out in 1795 by James Dunlop and James Harris after John Dunlop purchased a local mill the previous year. Bellefonte’s name, meaning “beautiful fountain,” is associated with the community’s Big Spring, an abundant natural spring that remains an important local landmark and water source.

Bellefonte prospered as iron production, transportation, commerce, and government activity expanded throughout Centre County. Its influence is also reflected in its remarkable political history: seven former governors have connections to the community.
