Luzerne County’s roots trace back to September 25, 1786, when the Pennsylvania General Assembly formed it from part of Northumberland County. Named in honor of Chevalier de la Luzerne, a French diplomat who aided the American Revolution, the county originally spanned much of northeastern Pennsylvania before Bradford, Lackawanna, Susquehanna, and Wyoming counties were carved from its territory. The Wyoming Valley’s fertile lands first attracted Connecticut settlers in the mid-18th century, sparking the Pennamite-Yankee Wars and culminating in the 1778 Battle of Wyoming, a tragic clash commemorated by local monuments. By the 19th century, Luzerne County had emerged as an anthracite coal-mining powerhouse, drawing waves of European immigrants and fueling rapid growth.
