Founded in 1785 by Swiss settler Ludwig Derr, Lewisburg began as Derrstown on land purchased from the Penn family. Derr’s strong alliances with local Native American communities helped protect the settlement from attacks. A post office opened in 1796 under the name Lewisburgh, and by March 21, 1812, the town was officially incorporated as a borough. In 1846, the University at Lewisburg (now Bucknell University) relocated here, anchoring the borough’s development as a center of learning and culture. The Susquehanna River both nourished the community and tested it—most notably during the Agnes Flood of June 1972, which led to the construction of landmarks like the Gordon Hufnagle Footbridge near the Borough Office.
