History of Lackawanna County
Founded on August 13, 1878, Lackawanna County was carved out of Luzerne County after decades of local petitioning to better serve the booming anthracite coal region. It holds the distinction of being Pennsylvania’s last county created and the only one formed after the Civil War, named for the Lackawanna River that threads through its valleys. In the mid-19th century, the discovery of rich anthracite deposits led to the rapid rise of the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company, which later pioneered steelmaking with the Bessemer process—transforming Scranton into an industrial powerhouse. Waves of immigrants, particularly from Ireland, Italy, and Eastern Europe, settled here to work in mines and mills, weaving a diverse cultural fabric that endures today. As coal production waned in the mid-20th century, the county reinvented itself, attracting manufacturing, healthcare, and education sectors. Outdoor recreation and heritage tourism also blossomed, with sites like Steamtown National Historic Site preserving the legacy of steam railroading.
