Snyder County was formed on March 2, 1855, from part of Union County and named in honor of Simon Snyder, Pennsylvania’s only three-term governor (1808–1817) who made his home in Selinsgrove . Early settlement began in the 1740s by Pennsylvania Germans from Berks and Lancaster counties, and Middleburg—laid out in 1800 and incorporated in 1864—became the county seat. Rich farmland, rolling ridges, and waterways like Penns Creek and the Susquehanna River fostered thriving agriculture and small-town industry that still define the Snyder County’s character
