Snyder County was formed on March 2, 1855, from part of Union County and named in honor of Simon Snyder, Pennsylvania’s only three-term governor (1808–1817) who made his home in Selinsgrove . Early settlement began in the 1740s by Pennsylvania Germans from Berks and Lancaster counties, and Middleburg—laid out in 1800 and incorporated in 1864—became the county seat.
