Union County was carved out of Northumberland County by the Pennsylvania General Assembly on March 22, 1813, named in homage to the federal Union. Initially, Mifflinburg served as the county seat until 1815, when it moved briefly to New Berlin before settling permanently in Lewisburg in 1855. The county’s fertile valleys and abundant waterways supported early agriculture, milling, and buggy manufacturing—so much so that Mifflinburg earned the moniker “Buggytown, USA” in the late 19th century. Today, Union County balances its rural heritage with vibrant college-town energy in Lewisburg, home to Bucknell University, and thriving small businesses scattered across its rolling hills.
