Picture it: family gathered around the table, laughter bouncing off the walls, the rich grain of old barnwood glowing under the soft light of a metal chandelier. That’s the kind of everyday beauty the Country Shaker Dining Collection brings to life.

We’re pleased to present the Country Shaker Dining Collection as part of our Real. Wood. Furniture.

This dining set is the perfect fit for any home and any size family to enjoy a meal, have a game night, or to entertain.

It has an “Industrial” feel to it and would fit in a cabin styled rustic room or something clean and modern. It really depends on the surroundings of the set to determine the style. This particular set would look excellent with a metal lighting fixture and wood floors.

As with everything we make, this collection was handcrafted in a small Amish woodworking shop.

This particular set is shown in Reclaimed Barnwood with a metal base.

The Barnwood feature is something that most everyone these days is very captivated by.

It’s all reclaimed Oak, so it is very strong, solid, and has the naturally “aged” look that comes with old barns.

Different stain and glaze colors can be added to give different shades of color.

All the wood parts of the Country Shaker dining collection were built using (North American) reclaimed barnwood.

When old barns are disassembled, the age-old lumber is salvaged and made into exquisite looking pieces of furniture.

This is an excellent way to preserve the old and vintage and give the valuable natural resource –wood—a second life.

The base is metal and was crafted in a small local shop.

Real. Wood. Furniture. is generational.

With just a little TLC, a collection like this will become one of the family heirlooms.

Some customers ask: “What about bugs and any insects in Reclaimed Barnwood?”  and “What about all those knot and nail holes. How would I clean food out of that in my table top?”

After a barn is disassembled, the lumber is hauled to the lumber yard where it undergoes a cleaning and drying process.

All the lumber is run under a metal detector twice where the nails are marked and removed, then stacked for drying. It’s then kiln dried to 7-8% moisture, the level for all lumber for furniture manufacturing, and to exterminate all those bugs and insects that may have been lodging there.

For knot and nail holes we have a great, quick solution: Epoxy. This keeps the look natural, yet creates a smoother user experience.

On all the buffets/servers (as well as all of our furniture) we use full extension drawers slides.

Soft closing doors and drawers are optional. If chosen, they give the piece a charming sense of “class”.

Our normal lead time is 8-10, but during the holiday season (can you believe it’s already getting to that time of year???), our lead-time will change to more like 10-12 weeks.

Shefford Bedroom Collection

The gorgeous Shefford Bedroom Collection is a part of our Real. Wood. Furniture. 

It’s style is modern with clean-cut lines yet with a vintage charm that can only come from old barnwood.

In addition to it’s vintage charm, barnwood is also a “green” and environmentally-friendly choice, as it is entirely reclaimed or re-used wood.

The wood use in this collection was taken from an old barn built somewhere between 1850-1900 in the Eastern United States (doesn’t get much more vintage than that!).

The barnwood raw material used to create our other barnwood furniture may be between 200-300 years old!

Here’s a bit of a story behind barnwood…

There is a certain fascinating aura of mystique mystery and awe associated with barnwood. Especially, when you consider the path a single barnwood board may have traveled.

All the barnwood furniture at Railside Furnishings is solid hardwood oak. Which, of course, means it started as an acorn falling from a tree.

If we use a little imagination, we can end up with quite an extensive history.

Let’s take a look at barnwood history…

ca. 1750-1800

These years may have been the time when the acorn took root and the mighty oak began standing it’s ground in a forest or woodland (this is based on the tree being 50 to 100 years old when it was cut).

ca 1850 to early 1900s

Barn may have been built somewhere in Eastern US by a land or livestock farmer from a mighty oak in the nearby woods or farm property.

Early 2000s

A barn is felled and handcrafted into beautiful heirloom furniture pieces (the barn may have been 100 or 150 years old when felled).

How’s that for wood with a history?

Consider all the scientific and technological developments these boards have survived.

Oh, if only barns could talk!

Even though reclaimed wood is already quite old, a properly cared for piece of authentic barnwood furniture will last for generations.

Barnwood furniture is naturally more rough, but we now offer a smooth barnwood as an option.

You still can have the authentic look with nail and knot holes, but the surface is smooth.

As with everything we do, and size, color, etc. are customizable.

Rockers and Swivel Gliders

The Buckeye Seating is superior in it’s comfort and a customer favorite!

Seat-wise and on the rockers and swivel gliders, a meticulously smooth and comfy ride is an understatement. 

The wooden frame is made from North American Hardwoods and upholstered using top-grain genuine leather.

It is perfect seating addition for the living room, bedroom, and/or office.

Top-Grain Leather

Top-grain leather has the genuine grain and is the “toughest” around because it comes from the top, very thick layer of beef cattle skin.

This makes it the most “care-free” leather in the industry. All spills, grease, etc. are super easy to just simply wipe off.

The biggest culprit to genuine leathers is magic markers (keep those far away!).

As with all of our products, the Buckeye Seating is individually handmade, assembled, sanded, stained, which gives a superior end product.

You choose the wood species, stain, and leather/fabric.

Live-Edge Furniture: the name pretty much sums it up, right?

The term refers to lumber that has been cut into slabs of the desired thickness, but instead of cutting away any knots or flaws to create symmetrical boards with clean, square edges, those natural elements are left entirely and only the bark itself is removed.

It’s easier to identify furniture made from live-edge wood than to understand what it really means.

When you look at custom live-edge furniture you can see the profile of the tree that yielded the wood for the piece.  

If you examine the edges of the wood slabs, the rough, thick texture of the tree’s surface is still visible.

The natural origins of the wood are quite apparent in these “live-edge” items.

TLDR; The Story Behind a Portable Sawmill, a Home Project, and Passion For Craftsmanship

• What began in 2006 as a simple project to clear our own woodland with a portable Wood-Mizer sawmill soon became the heart of our family business. Cutting trees turned into crafting projects, which turned into custom sawing and fine furniture making—a journey that shaped both our skills and our story.
• Today, we still use slabs from our own lumber to create live-edge tables, lighting, and custom furniture that reflect the same care and craftsmanship learned years ago. From tree to fine furniture, every piece carries our family’s passion for real wood.

In 2006 we purchased an LT40 Wood Mizer Portable sawmill. It started out just as a project to clear our own back forty (i.e. the backside of a property).

In this case, it was our own woodland with trees that were ready to harvest.

With all this new lumber available, we started creating all sorts of wooden projects. It was a great way for dad (Nathan Yoder) and the boys to work together. 

After a few years of these wood projects (and hands on training for the boys as they grew up), we eventually we got into custom sawing work. This lead to more requests for custom wood products, and over time it grew and played a large role in the business we are today.
