Bloomsburg, nestled along the Susquehanna River in northeastern Pennsylvania, has deep roots dating to 1772 when settler James McClure erected the area’s first log cabin in what was then Bloom Township. The township was formally established in 1797, and on March 4, 1870, it was reincorporated as the Town of Bloomsburg—earning and retaining its status as the only incorporated town in Pennsylvania. During the 19th century, Bloomsburg thrived as an industrial center: iron furnaces sprang up after local ore discoveries, Joseph Ratti’s Silk Mills opened in 1888, and John Lockard’s railroad car works fueled regional growth. Educational progress followed, with the Bloomsburg Literary Institute (1839) evolving into today’s Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. The town’s architectural heritage is enshrined in its Historic District—over 600 contributing buildings preserved under the Historic Architectural Review Board since 1980. The Bloomsburg Fair, founded in 1855 as an agricultural exhibition, is now Pennsylvania’s largest fair. For more on Bloomsburg’s past and present, visit the official town site or Wikipedia.
